vCenter 4.1 Upgrade – VirtualCenter service fails to start after upgrade is complete

23 11 2010

After a vCenter Server upgrade the other day I found that the VirtualCenter service wouldn’t start, with these events/errors in the vpxd log:

Calling: Vpxd::DbHelper::Init()
InitializeTable error: Column BOOT_OPTION_RETRY_ENABLED_FLG does not exist in table VPX_SN_CONFIG_INFO
Table VPX_SN_CONFIG_INFO creation failed.
Schema and XML mapping files are out-of-sync
Init failed: Column BOOT_OPTION_RETRY_ENABLED_FLG does not exist in table VPX_SN_CONFIG_INFO
Failed to intialize VMware VirtualCenter. Shutting down…
Forcing shutdown of VMware VirtualCenter now

A little googling led me here:

… and this KB article ended up fixing the problem, but I DID have to restore the SQL db first, re-run the installation (after a clean uninstall), then run the query:

http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1024449

Query:

sp_configure 'user options', 64
reconfigure
